I've been doing a lot of arm and ribrest bevels here lately, and so far have only used Gabon Ebony, mostly for its "forgiveness factor". My process is getting dialed in to the point that soon I may brave using something lighter in color, but I'll be doing a few more in ebony. Processing pieces for the veneer cap is very time consuming, and my resawing setup is less-than perfect, so I wind up with a lot of waste, and too much time sanding the pieces down to the proper thickness.

I bought some "ebony" veneer from Lee Valley, but it turned out to be very light-colored, stripey Maccassar, so of no use. Does anyone have a good source for Gabon Ebony veneer? TIA.

Here's a couple of shots of the latest.

The guitar in the pictures is gorgeous.

Try Certainly Wood in Buffalo.
They have pretty much any veneer available.

Great, thanks guys, I'll look into both sources. The guitar pictured is a Padauk and Carolina Red Spruce fanned-fret baritone I'm building for Paul Heumiller of Dream Guitars. It's a personal instrument for him, and the first of a series of possibly ten or twelve to be sold through the shop. A great opportunity, but a lot of pressure!

Well, that was easy. Just ordered a big piece from VeneerSupplier.com. Looks perfect for my needs. Thanks John and Brian!

Beautiful guitar Ken. Sure would like to see how you do that.

You might also want to look at the black fiber veneers LMI and some others offer... I've done several bevels with them with excellent results, plus no pore filling or problems with it wanting to split along the grain like ebony can.

I use black fiber that I spray black because the fiber itself can look a little bluish.

Ken, I second Brian's vote for Certainly Wood (East Aurora, NY) I was there about 3-weeks ago, a veritable veneer candy store. They have great customer service and will ship mail orders out. In Canada, A&M Woods in Cambridge, Ontario has a great selection of veneers as well (but not as good as Certainly Wood).
